JOHN 17:3

ehovah's witnesses, jehovah witness

THIS IS ETERNAL LIFE THAT THEY MAY KNOW YOU, THE ONLY TRUE GOD, AND JESUS CHRIST WHOM YOU HAVE SENT.

The NWT reads, “This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ.”

The Greek word used in this translation is ginosko. It has a wider scope of meaning than the English word “know”, including perceiving, learning, understanding, experiencing, performing, and willing. To know is not to be fully intellectually informed about some abstract principle, but to understand and experience God. Knowledge is not to possess information, but rather it’s exercise.  Knowing God is not simply an intellectual comprehension, but a response of faith including the acceptance of Christ. Most certainly, to know God is not to know about him in an impersonal manner, or to struggle philosophically with his essence, but rather to recognize and accept his claims. Both "to obtain knowledge'"and " to know" seem to have the same meaning, but when applied to our lives they are very different.

If I were to write a book about myself and included all aspects about my life in full detail, anyone who would read the book about my life would have knowledge about me. Now the question is does this person know me and do I know him? On the other hand consider my eight year old son who does not know much about my past, but spends time with me and grew to know me, does he know me? My son knows my likes and dislikes. He knows how to please me and when he has shortcomings I don’t hold it against him because of our relationship. There is a genuine deep love between us both. I find pleasure in him. This is the relationship that all of us have to have with God to obtain everlasting life.

To have knowledge of God does not guarantee us eternity with God. Remember the old rule applies here. To obtain everlasting life does not come from what you know, but who you know.
